D.F.M. London Gazette 18.6.1943. Recommendation states 'This N.C.O. has been on continuous operations in the Middle East and Burma since July 1941 and has carried out 56 sorties totalling 295 operational hours. 16 raids were carried out in the Middle East, including convoy protection in the approaches to Malta and strafing raids in Fighter Blenheims; the remainder on bombing targets in Burma. Sergeant Taylor has always been the embodiment of enthusiasm for operational flying. His will to engage targets and insistence on taking each and every opportunity of doing the utmost damage is sufficient to animate other Air Gunners with the same spirit of losing no chance of whipping the enemy to the utmost of his powers'.
Sergeant George Derek Taylor, D.F.M., was serving in No. 113 Squadron at the time of the above award and was similarly employed when killed in action on 23.9.1944 while piloting a Hurricane IIc in a ground attack role against the Japanese. He is commemorated on Kranji War Memorial, Singapore.
