St. Nicholas commands a picturesque location on the outskirts of the historic and unspoilt town of Richmond. The last remnants of the Pennines provide the spur on which St.Nicholas stands. The house is situated on a southward sloping hillside which rises above the River Swale as it tumbles from the North-West Riding to the great Vale of York. To the south and east spreads the vast panorama of the Mowbray Vale, with the Cleveland and Hambledon hills in the distance. The remains of the twelfth century Easby Abbey nestle in parkland below the ruined Norman Castle. St.Nicholas was founded in 1171 as a Benedictine hospitium attached to Easby Abbey by one of the Earls of Richmond. The present house, rebuilt in the 17th century was bought by the Marquess of Zetland of the neighbouring Aske estate. It was tactfully restored by Ignatius Bonomi in the early 19th century with the removal of " Tudor" chimneys and stone mullion My sister and I thought it would be useful for those of you who come to this sale to know about our mother Serena James. She was born Serena Lumley, the only child of Aldred and Celia, the 10th Earl and Countess of Scarbrough. Her early life was spent at Lumley Castle in Co. Durham, Sandbeck Park in Yorkshire and 21 Park Lane in London. In 1923 she married Robert James (third son of the 2nd Lord Northbourne), our father, a widower and went to live at St. Nicholas, Richmond in North Yorkshire - her home for the rest of her life. She died peacefully in her sleep in her own bed four months short of her 100th birthday. She devoted her life to our father, the garden which he created, the family and many charities. The contents of this sale is a collection of pictures, china and furniture from the houses that were her homes during her lifetime. LADY WESTBURY SILVER AND PLATED WARES
