With an undulating foliate scroll toprail with reeded finials and pierced fret-carved tendrils, on fluted uprights with spirally-turned splats, the padded arms with swan's head terminals, with a padded seat, on reeded turned tapered legs, brass caps and castors

Lot Essay

The settee is richly carved in the early 19th century 'old English' or 'Elizabethan' fashion, and its pattern was probably inspired by an Indian (Coromandel Coast) ebony chair belonging to the Bond Street dealer/antiquarian John Webb that H. Shaw featured in 'Specimens of Ancient Furniture', 1836 (see A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London 2001, p. 131, fig. 57)
