Please note that at least two other versions of this bust are known, a terracotta in the Musee Municipal, Malines, and a tinted plaster example in a private collection in France. The Malines version has recently been given a tentative attribution to the Malinois sculptor Jan Frans van Geel (1756-1830). For further details concerning the model and attribution, please refer to G. Hubert and G. Ledoux-Lebard, Napoleon - portraits contemporains, bustes et statues, Paris, 1999, pp. 73-76, figs. 49 and 51.

Lot Essay

The bust is related to a portrait by Charles Louis Corbet (1758-1808), of which a prime version is in the Muse des Beau Arts, Lille (1799).
