George Cuitt the elder (1743-1818) was born in Moulton, Yorkshire. In his early days as an artist having shown a mature taste for drawing and design he was sent to Italy at the expense Sir Lawrence Dundas, the first Earl of Zetland, for whose family he had painted a series of portraits. The Marquess of Zetland, who owned the neighbouring Aske estate, bought St. Nicholas in 1813. Cuitt studied for six years in Rome, and also pursued landscape painting, a branch of art that was more congenial to his tastes. He returned to England in 1775 and 1776 he exhibitied 'The infant Jupiter fed with goat's milk and honey' at the Royal Academy. Cuitt exhibited a number of topographical landscapes at the Royal Academy from, 1776-98. His landscapes display and unique character and style; his work depicts topographical severity using stiff and linear forms with a cold tonality. Due to ill health Cuitt settled and later retired in Richmond, North Yorkshire where he found constant employment in the commissions given to him by gentlemen whose parks and residences were in his neighbourhood. Cuitt died in 1818. To the collector Cuitt is a rare painter of the very individual Yorkshire School, which produced equally accomplished artists such as Ibbetson, Nicholson and Joseph Rhodes.
