ENGLISH, MID 17TH CENTURY
the plate set within a panel of ivory satin, drawn in ink and en grisaille with the four elements: the top embroidered in brightly coloured silks and purle worked with the personification of Earth flanked by fruiting trees and arrangements of flowers in the corners, the sides with Air holding a bird, atop a leopard, and Fire holding a blazing heart, above a lion, each beneath a canopy, surrounded by daffodils, pansies and other flowers, with Water holding a fish below, flanked by fruiting trees and baskets of flowers as above--24 x 20. 1/2in. (60 x 51cm.), glazed and within a frame of tortoiseshell veneer
