In the Louis XIV Style, In the manner of André Charles Boulle, By Befort Jeune, Second half 19th Century
Inlaid in contre partie, the rectangular top with a breakfront edge, above egg-and-dart moulding, the central door raised with a figure of Bacchus on a pedestal with paw feet, below a Bacchic mask and acanthus scrolls, flanked to each side with a panel door with a winged cherub holding drapery, above trophies with strap-work and a mask, the lock escutcheon cast as a lyre with a crown surmount and crossed torches, the interior with adjustable shelves, the sides each with a fielded panel centred by a pierced mount, on plinth base and substanial acanthus-cast baluster feet, numerously stamped BEFORT JEUNE on the underside of the top element of the carcass and on the top edge of each upright

Lot Essay

Mathieu Befort, Jeune, established his business in the rue Neuve-Saint Gilles between 1844 and 1866. He specialised in meubles boulle. A related bureau plat, by the same maker was offered in these rooms 2 March 1995, lot 145.
