a Steiff teddy bear with white mohair, pronounced clipped muzzle, black boot button eyes, pinkish/brown stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs with felt pads, hump and button in ear --19½in. (49.5cm.) high, circa 1908 (wear to tummy, stuffing shifted, bald patch to back of left arm and tips of feet pads with holes), a Steiff teddy bear with golden mohair, pronounced clipped muzzle, black boot button eyes, black stitched nose, mouth and claws, swivel head, jointed elongated limbs and hump --19in. (48cm.) high, circa 1908 (balding to back of head, splitting to ankles, overall wear, stuffing shifted and repair to one foot pad), two studio photographs of the two bears and two boys --3¾in. x 5½in. (9.5cm. x 14cm.) size of image -- and a photo of the boys outside their home with the bears sitting in the background (5)

These two bears belonged to Lawrence P. Bentick Cook and his brother John E. Cook. Lawrence, the younger brother was born on the 24th August 1904 and John, in 1902. They have lived with the family in Ottawa, Canada ever since. The photographs feature John, Lawrence and the two Steiff bears. Also sold with the lot, is a letter from the family giving details of the history of the bears and a note to the future purchaser saying 'may you enjoy them as much as we have'.
