The original composition of Caryatide tombée portant sa pierre was conceived in 1881 as an element at the top of the left pilaster of La porte d'enfer, where it crouches under folds of drapery from above. It proved to be highly popular, and in January 1894 Mme. Dumon commissioned the first variant, an example in stone. In total, four examples were carried out between 1894 and 1907, in addition to which Rodin simultaneously conceived another version of this caryatid composition, Caryatide tombie portant son urne.
