NASA, ever aware of the Russian firsts in the space race (first satellite, first manned flight) gave this photograph "on behalf of the American people" to the Head of the Soviet Space Program Colonel General Nicolai Kamanin. The gift was presented personally by Neil Armstrong on the occasion of Armstrong's first official visit to the USSR in 1970.
