Naked and carried on the crest of a wave, arms aloft and holding a scallop shell, sea-foam rising at the back of her legs, on a circular naturalistically-carved base inscribed F. Andreini Firenze, one finger restored; on a verde antico marble pedestal, the circular top above a fluted tapering column, on a spreading foot and octagonal base

Ferdinando Andreini studied under Ulysse Cambo and worked and exhibited in Florence. The present marble figure of a sea-nymph belongs to the series of works by Andreini, executed during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and concentrating on the naked or scantily-clad female figure. Other titles in this series include Luna (see Christie's East, 5 November 1992, lot 96) and The Wood Nymph (see Sotheby's London, 20 March 1992, lot 169).
