Lot Essay

Including two rare views of the Camerons' coffee estate at Dimbula, one showing a residence in the foreground with six figures posed in the garden. The Camerons left England in 1875 for Ceylon, when Charles Cameron was eighty. He wished to return to the country where he had lived for many years earlier in his life and to be reunited with his sons, who ran the family coffee plantations there. Gernsheim writes "While Cameron is not known to have taken a single landscape or seascape on the Isle of Wight, she sent Gustave Doré a view of a warterfall at Dimbula.....". It is possible this was another print of that titled Devon Falls Dimbula in this group. Although this print is not signed in the negative by Scowen it appears to be part of the same series as those with the signature.

A list of titles is available upon request.
