Paul and Prosper Henry were astronomers and photographers at the Paris Observatory. The first photographically based map of the stars had been made in the Paris Observatory in 1874 and the Henry brothers began working on a more extensive mapping of the heavens in the late 1880s, a task which was to prove interminable as each new gain in technology resulted in more stars becoming visible through the lens.
