The Battle of Aix
Official report of the attack made by frigates, fire-ships, and bomb-vessels under the command of Captain Lord Cochrane at the Basque Roads. Cochrane launches night attack, breaking through protective boom, causing mayhem with vessels filled with powder, shells, and Congreve's rockets. Next morning Cochrane signals Lord Gambier's fleet lying offshore that seven French vessels were beached and ready for destruction. Gambier fails to respond. Back page cols 1, 2 and 3 -- 92cm. of col space; Also:- "Attack on the French Fleet"
An eye-witness account:- ...now the rockets began to fly about; some of them grazing along the surface of the ocean; others ranging through the air... Next morning Lord Cochrane's guns raked the grounded French vessels under the batteries of the Isle d'Aix, four Men-of-War surrender, two escape up the Charente on the rising tide. Dirty linen is aired in public, Cochrane said to be seething over Lord Gambier's failure to respond to his signal to assist in destroying the seven beached vessels. The Times advocates moderation.
