Lot Essay

The Italian Hero, probably named for Guiseppe Garibaldi, the unifier of Italy, was built by Holman at Dartmouth in 1862. Registered at 136 tons, she measured 93 feet in length with a 22 foot beam, and was owned by Duarte & Co. who operated her out of Liverpool.
