Lot Essay

Le Souverain was one of the three 'Louis XIV' class 120-gun three deckers ordered for the French Navy when the Napoleonic Wars were at their height but apparently the only one of the trio to be completed before the middle of the century. Laid down at Toulon in 1813, Le Souverain was launched on 25th August 1819, afterwards being converted to screw propulsion in 1854. Displacing 5,094 tons bm., she measured 205½ feet in length with a 57 foot beam, and was last recorded in 1882 after which she was deleted from the Navy Lists.
