Lot Essay

The Florentine was owned and built by T. Hilyard at New Brunswick, Canada, in 1868. Registered at 979 tons, she measured 171½ feet in length with a 36 foot beam and was presumably built as a speculation since she was sold soon after completion to O. Edwards of Liverpool. The fact that she is depicted here wearing her original owner's house flag suggests this work was commissioned to mark her maiden voyage to England prior to her sale.
