The iron screw steamer Africa was built for D.H. Watjen & Co. of Bremen by the Weser Shipbuilding Company, also of Bremen, in 1883. Registered at 2,131 tons gross (1,620 net), she measured 289½ feet in length with a 37½ foot beam and was powered by a compound 2-cylinder 235nhp. engine manufactured by her builders. Although last listed in 1920 (see Lloyd's Register of that year), by which time she was Italian owned, it actually seems likely that she had been a wartime casualty - possibly sunk as a blockship - but this remains speculation.
