AN EARLY LOUIS XV GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Nicolas Dandrieux (fl. 1716-1762), marked, Paris, 1728/1729, with the charge mark of Jacques Cottin
Cartouche-shaped flattened box with wavy outlines, slightly raised lid and receding base, the cover and base centred with a cloud-shaped polished gold reserve, that on the cover on a frosted ground surrounded by a broad border of short stripes of polished gold alternating with bands of engraved foliage, the base similarly decorated, the concave polished gold sides centred by four reserves chased with flowers on a frosted ground, the slightly raised thumbpiece incorporated in the reeded rim and echoed at the front of the base by a raised reeded scroll
