A VERY FINE AND IMPORTANT SAXON HARDSTONE AND GOLD SNUFF-BOX
by Johann Christian Neuber (1736-1808), the flange engraved 'Neuber à Dresde', Dresden, circa 1780, struck with the Dutch import mark for gold 1906-1953
Large oval box, the lid centred by a slightly convex oval polished gold panel encrusted with a Zellenmosaik composition in vari-colour hardstones including lapis-lazuli and various agates and in coloured glass, depicting a flowerspray bound with a red ribbon, within a simulated pearl surround, the cover and similarly centred base panel inlaid with a radiating sunburst motif of carnelian plaques alternating with striated beige agate plaques framed by laurel swags in engraved green chrysoprase hung from simulated pearls, the sides similarly inlaid with alternating vertical carnelian and agate plaques, the broad polished gold borders inlaid with engraved chrysoprase leaves alternating with flowerheads in colourful hardstones and coloured glass, the gold rims engraved with scalloped borders
