Lot Essay

William Chambers, son of Robert Chambers and Miss Metcalf, was a political servant of the East India Company and a distinguished Oriental scholar who specialised in the dialects of Hindostan. He became the interpreter to the Supreme Court at Bengal where his brother, Sir Robert Chambers was Lord Chief Justice of Bengal. William Chambers married Charity, daughter of Thomas Fraser of Balmain, Invernesshire. Their eldest son, William Frederick Chambers was one of the leading physicians of the day and was physician in ordinary to Queen Adelaide 1836, William IV 1837 and Queen Victoria in 1837 and to the Duchess of Kent in 1839.
