A LOUIS XVI ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE
by Nicolas-Augustin Delions (fl. 1759-1785), marked, Paris, 1781/1782, with the first charge and discharge marks of Henry Clavel, later struck with two French restricted warranty marks for gold, French Departments 1838-1919
Oval box, the cover, base and four side panels enamelled with translucent moss-green on an engine-turned ground engraved with wavy lines scattered with pellets, within reeded gold borders, the cover centred with an oval miniature under glass depicting Queen Maria Leszczynska in fur-bordered red dress, wearing a white lace cap fastened under her chin with black lace, within a matted gold frame applied with raised opalescent enamel beads, the frosted gold borders also set with raised opalescent enamel beads interspersed with chased flowerheads and translucent green enamelled foliage, the side pilasters similarly chased with flowerheads and enamelled in translucent green

Lot Essay

Maria (1703-1768), daughter of Stanislas Leszczynski, ex-King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine, was married to King Louis XV of France in 1725. The present miniature is after Nattier's painting at Versailles.
