Lot Essay

The year VIII of the Revolutionary calendar corresponded to September 1799 - September 1800. According to Williamson (supra), Jean-Pierre Pagin was born in Paris in 1723. He was a conseiller du roi and trésorier de Son Altesse monseigneur le comte de Clermont (see lot 40). He died at Coulommiers. Dumont's fee book shows that he also painted Mademoiselle Pagin, in the year V of the Revolution (1796/1797) and 'Le Citoyen Pagin fils', probably the son of Jean-Pierre Pagin, in the same year VIII.
This important miniature will be included in B. Hofstetter's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of François Dumont's works.
