A LOUIS XVI JEWELLED AND ENAMELLED VARI-COLOUR GOLD CARNET-DE-BAL
Paris, 1777/1778, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache, maker's mark indistinct, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold
Slightly tapering rectangular etui-à-tablettes with arched top, of oblong section, decorated overall with vertical gold flutes alternating with translucent green enamelled bands of diagonal engine-turning, within two-colour gold husk and ribbon borders, obverse and reverse of cover applied with silver-mounted rose-cut diamond inscription Souvenir d'amitié on rectangular foiled green glass panels within rose-cut diamond borders, the obverse of the base centred with an oval enamel painted with a veiled Vestal Virgin at her cloudy altar trying to protect herself against Cupid's arrow, within a pierced ruby and rose-cut diamond double border, the reverse with identically framed rose-cut diamond monogram 'BC' on an oval slightly raised translucent green enamelled concentric wavy guilloché panel; rose-cut diamond set pushpiece; three-leaved tablets inside
