Ingot-shaped box, the wavy engine-turned gold panels on cover, sides and base enamelled in translucent blue and with a pattern of green and gold paillon pellets, flowerheads and scallops, the broad opaque white enamelled borders engraved en taille d'épargne with trailing foliate garlands, bright-cut rims, the 'envelope-style' thumbpiece applied with a rose-cut diamond pushpiece

Lot Essay

Johann-Georg Aigner was born between 1761 and 1765, became a master goldsmith in 1789 and was active until 1820. Two other boxes by him are recorded, one in the Gilbert Collection (illustrated in C. Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes - Volume Two, London, 1999, p. 93, no. 585), the other in the Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. no. 190-1878.
