Lot Essay
Charles-Louis of Bourbon-Parma was Duke of Lucca until he was reinstated as Duke of Parma under the name of Charles II in 1847. At the congress of Vienna in 1815, the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza had been attributed to Napoleon's wife, Empress Marie-Louise and it was not until a year later on her death that the Bourbons of Parma could recover their possessions. Nevertheless, the year following his return to Parma, Duke Charles II abdicated in favour of his son, the future Duke Charles III of Parma. In 1820, Charles-Louis married Maria-Teresa of Savoy, a daughter of King Victor Emanuel I of Sardinia and his wife Archduchess Maria-Teresa of Austria-Este.
