Lot Essay

According to Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein (op. cit.), the present drawing may be a study for the painting Joueuse de Guitare (1867; collection Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington, Connecticut), in which the artist depicted Victorine Meurent playing the guitar, as seen from behind.
