Lot Essay

On the left-hand side of the picture Hammer depicts the Calberlas Zuckersiederei with the Semper Opera and the Katholische Hofkirche in the centre. The tower on the left is the Laterne on the dome of the Frauenkirche and the right tower is known as the Schloßturm, or the Hausmannsturm of the Residenzschloß. The building on the right is part of the Zwinger Gallery.

Hammer was a pupil of Johann Philipp Veith (1768-1837) at the Dresden Academy of which Hammer was to become a Professor in 1829. He specialised in city views and exhibited in Dresden from 1840 to 1860.
