Each modelled with three addorsed griffin head monopodia terminating in paw feet, supporting stiff-leaf cast candle nozzles above gadrooned drip-pans, on concave trefoil stepped bases with conforming galleries

Lot Essay

The Grecian tripod candlesticks with their palm-flowered 'candle' vases stand on 'altar' tripods with 'Apollo' griffin monopodia reflect the 'antique' fashion promoted by C. H. Tatham's Etchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture, 1799 and Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. A pair of this model were sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 5 July 1996, lot 3.
