Lot Essay

The table has truss-scrolled trestles, in the manner of the antique 'Agrippa' sarcophagus, and derives from Thomas Hope's Duchess Street tables (T. Hope, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. XII), which derived in turn from one illustrated in C. Percier and P. Fontaine's Recueil de Décorations Intérieures, 1802. Related trestles feature on a rosewood table sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 8 July 1993, lot 36.
