A Regency mahogany and brass-mounted striking bracket clock
First quarter 19th century
The case with brass pineapple finial to the brass-lined fluted pediment, with acroteria mouldings to the front angles above brass pharaonic caryatid mounts inscribed with pseudo hieroglyphics, resting on acanthus-moulded volutes, the front with moulded border with brass inlay and brass lined fielded panel below the dial, with silk backed tapering gilt-brass tracery sound frets to the sides, the base with ripple-moulded panels to the front and raised on stylised acanthus feet, the white painted Roman convex dial with strike/silent lever above XII and steel crescent moon hands (dial retouched), the twin gut fusee movement with anchor escapement and strike on bell, with trip repeat, arched plates, with engraved border and pendulum holdfast to the backplate, with label attached to the door 'ATKINS., PRACTICAL WATCH & CLOCKMAKER JEWELLER & C. HIGH ST, ARUNDEL'; with a copy of William Hervey, The Journals of the Hon. William Hervey 1755-1814, 1906

The Marquesses of Bristol, probably in their Brighton House, and by descent to the late Frederick, 7th Marquess of Bristol, Ickworth, Suffolk, from whom bought privately by the present owner.

Lot Essay

The clock case, with its Egyptian 'battered' or 'sloping' façade recalls the Temple of Tentyris facade of William Bullock's 'London Museum', established in Piccadilly in 1810 and displaying a statue of the sun deity Isis. Another case of this model, but lacking Grecian acroteria, bears a movement by the Royal Exchange firm of James McCabe (fl. 1778-1883). See R.C.R.
