Lot Essay

The exotic lake-side panorama of birds and a kiosk framed by flowering shrubs, has been compared to the oeuvre of the artist Jean Pillement (d. 1808), author of various Chinese pattern books including the Cahier d'Oiseaux Chinois. A related tapestry, possibly emblematic of the Continent of Asia, bears the inscription of C. Conceix of the Aubusson factory; while another version of this same scene, but including a boat, bears the inscription of Pierre de Montezert, who in 1733 was appointed 'Tenturier pour Sa Majesté des Manufactures de Tapisseries etablies en la Ville et Fauxbourgs d'Aubusson' (G. L. Hunter, The Practical Book of Tapestries, London, 1925, pl. XIIIb). An almost identical example was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 12 December 1991, lot 12 (£6,600 inc. premium).
