Lot Essay

This lady's writing-cabinet is fitted with candle-slides at the sides of its 'commode' chest-of-drawers; while its hinged top, incorporating 'letter-box' racks and leather wallet, reveals a folding writing-box with leather-lined slope. With its flat top, it represents an alternative version of the convenient 'Davenport' desk discussed in J. C. Loudon's Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833, no. 1945. The lock-maker Bramah, introduced the Piccadilly address on their locks in 1798.
