Lot Essay

As the artist's education at the Kunstschule in Berlin was interrupted by war, he was largely self-taught. Gramatté's graphic work is a direct reflection of his injured psyche due to his front-line experiences. Qual with its powerful and vibrant colours and dramatic expressive qualities is regarded as a highpoint of Gramatté's entire graphic oeuvre.

Impressions were handprinted and another colour variant is known in black, red, violet and yellow. Impressions in any colour variant are very rare.
