Lot Essay

In the winter of 1898 Paul Baum travelled through the south of Italy visiting Capri, Naples and Sicily. Only four oils and three watercolours from this first Italian trip have survived. Amongst them a watercolour of Vesuvius, Der Vesuv (H.Kx2), clearly shows the strong influence of Seurat and Signac on Baum's work of the late 1890s. Both artists had been included in French Pointillist exhibitions held by Bruno and Paul Cassirer who were Baum's Berlin dealers.

Dr. Wolfram Hitzeroth has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
