Lot Essay

According to Professor Martin Urban the present work belongs to a group of watercolours called Phantasien executed between 1931 and 1935. Refering to these Nolde wrote to his friend Hans Fehr in October 1931: "Eine Anzahl ganz merkwürdiger phantastischer Aquarelle konnte ich im letzten Herbst noch malen." (see Nolde exh. cat. Stuttgart, 1987-1988, p. 114).
