The dance halls and variety theatres of Berlin provided Pechstein with endless subjects in the winter and spring of 1910. Painting in an expressionist style entirely in keeping with the Brücke movement, he executed oils such as Der grosse Inder, Inder und Weib and Die gelbe Maske. For a short period he executed striking studies of physiognomies such as Zwei Juden which illustrate his fine touch as a draughtsman and his control of the bold colours of expressionism. In the early summer of 1910 Pechstein joined Schmidt-Rottluff and the other Brücke painters in Dangast where he executed arguably his greatest expressionist pictures.
