When Reinhard Piper first met Franz Marc in 1910 he asked the young and still unknown artist to design the cover for his book "Das Tier in der Kunst". Marc chose to base his design on a watercolour by Delacroix from 1824, Cheval effrayé par l'Orage, housed in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts, and simplified it by only using black and white, thereby stressing the movement and drama of the scene. The book, which also illustrates Delacroix's watercolour after page 150 and Marc's bronze sculpture Zwei Pferde, was published in the same year. Marc's great admiration for Delacroix again became apparent in his woodcut Löwenjagd nach Delacroix (L.838) of 1913. In the article Franz Marc contributed to this celebrated book he wrote that there is a straight road in France from Delacroix and Millet via Degas, Cezanne van Gogh and the pointillists to the goal, which he also tries to achieve: "das Zittern und Rinnen des Blutes in der Natur zum Bilde zu machen, mit neuen Bewegungen und Farben, die unseres alten Staffeleibildes spotten." (Exh. cat. Der Blaue Reiter, Kunstmuseum Bern, 1986, no. 93.)
