Minute repeaterA minute repeating watch allows time to be heard as well as seen. When the mechanism at the side of the case is activated, two hammers strike gongs within the case. One hammer strikes a low-toned gong for hours, then both hammers strike both gongs alternatively for quarter hours and the second hammer strikes a high-toned gong for the minutes.Daniel Quare was granted a patent for the repeating mechanism in 1687 and the first minute repeating wristwatch was produced in 1892. Modern minute repeaters such as the Audemars Piguet offered seek to contain this complicated ???????? in the thinnest possible case, a technically demanding feat as the sound of the gong is compromised as the movement is made smaller.
