In 1932, the Art Students League of New York, invited George Grosz to teach a summer and a winter class there. Grosz accepted the invitation and the following month embarked for the United States.
On his arrival, Grosz was surprised to discover that his popular ruthless descriptions of the German social scene has made him a celebrity. Acclaimed as a satirist, Grosz pursued his artistic exploration of New York just as he had previously done in Berlin: "New York - that great wonderful city. I love this town. I have seen tramps sleeping on newspaper in Union square...I have seen Negroes, Chinese, red-haired Irishmen, sailors; Broadway aglow at night; the huge department stores; workers in overall suspended between steel girders...this town is full of pictures and contrast"(letter to Otto Schmalhausen, 14 July 1932, from New York).
