Lot Essay

In 1927 Christian Rohlfs had travelled to Ascona, Switzerland, for the first time. So much did he appreciate the scenery of the adjacent Lago Maggiore that he decided to settle here the following year. From his lakefront villa, the Casa Margot, he painted his celebrated views of the lake including the present work.

Mondschein am Lago Maggiore was part of the important collection of Dr. Max Lütze, which also included the celebrated oil by Otto Mueller, Zigeunerinnen am Lagerfeuer (lot 141).
