Due to the War, Meidner left Germany for England in 1939. His family joined him the following year and they remained there, based mainly in London, until 1953. Meidner executed the present work in 1942, whilst he was living on West Heath Drive, Golders Green, in the north west of the capital. This was not the first time Meidner had shown an interest in the activity and intrigue offered by bars and cafés, having executed a number of works on this theme whilst living in Berlin before the First World War.
