Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Washington, D.C., 24 May 1864. 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, intact blue paper seal of the United States at left, bold heading at top "President of the United States of America," beneath which an American Eagle and "E Pluribus Unum" motto fly above billowing clouds, at bottom a large vignette of crossed flags, cannons and other military paraphenalia, accomplished in manuscript, some discoloration, Stanton's signature light. President Lincoln and Secretary Stanton appoint Miles W. Caughey "Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers with the rank of Captain."
