ZAPATA BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS. An important letter written shortly after Zapata successfully led an army to the outskirts of Mexico City, forcing President Huerta to flee the country to be replaced by Venustiano Carranza. Emiliano Zapata, whose interests in revolution were primarily centered on agrarean reform, writes to one of his commanders: "...Sir Colonel Magaña should come later to this place, Yautepec. I told you that we would see each other in that place, but because of my illness it was not possible to go and now you ought to wait...I'm going there soon." Zapata directs his general, "you ought to have your forces ready and near the Cuernavaca plaza" and counsels "I communicate it to you for your intelligence and ends." Zapata closes the letter "Reform, Liberty, Justice and Law The General in charge of the Liberating Army of the Republic" and boldly signs (his signature extends nearly six inches across the page).

Emiliano Zapata spent much of his life attempting to bring reform to Mexico. In 1911, he aided Francisco Madero in a successful revolution to overthrow Porfirio Diaz, but later turned against Madero when he refused to institute substantial agrarean reform. After supporting Carranza, Zapata allied himself with Pancho Villa when it became apparent that Carranza was also not inclined to the reforms that he desired. During the subsequent military operations, Zapata became known for his forceful and sometimes harsh leadership, but his effectiveness was undeniable. In 1919, Zapata was lured into an ambush by Carranza's government and was killed.
