BYRON, George Gordon Noel. Poems Original and Translated. Newark: S. and J. Ridge, 1808.
8o (175 x 105 mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece. (Offsetting on title, some occasional pale spotting and soiling.) Green morocco elaborately gilt, gilt-lettered on spine, turn-ins gilt, inset gilt vellum panel, uncut; morocco folding case, watered silk linings.
FIRST EDITION, Randolph's second issue, the copy he describes as "the only one recorded." "Signatures A, B, C, F, G, H, I, K, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, X and Y are the correct 1808 first issue. Signatures D, E, L and U are a reprint made after 1811 as the paper of these signatures is watermarked 'H Salmon 1811.' [The entire unauthorized edition was printed on this paper.] The signature U here is of six leaves, rather than the usual four, to replace the mutilated signatures U and V of the first issue. 'Said' in the footnote, page 115, is spelled correctly, and the second stanza, page 29, is misnnumbered 4 rather than 6. This copy proves that Ridge actually did, as he told Byron, use newly printed sheets in conjunction with sheets from the proper 1808 first issue to make complete copies. The title page in this volume is the correct 1808 form, not the altered 1811 or still later title page used in the third issue" (Randolph, pp.12-13). This issue not described by Wise. Wise Byron I, pp.9-10 (first edition and "unauthorized edition" of 1811). VERY RARE.
