12o (187 x 110 mm). Half-title. Original drab printed boards, uncut (discreetly rebacked, front hinge cracked); cloth folding case. Provenance: Isabella Fenwick (signature on half-title); R.E. Simmons (stamp on pastedown).
FIRST EDITION, second issue (or variant) according to Wise, paper watermarked "E & P 1805," without the prefatory leaf and with p.5 line 7 reading "Despatch." Randolph disagrees with Wise's appraisal of these issues: "Wise's contention that the copies without the prefactory [sic] leaf constitute an issue is incorrect--the two variants differ in the printing of 'dispatch,' and, as noted above, a volume lacking the prefactory [sic] leaf is only incomplete." The misprint on p.5 is the distinguishing point between the two issues, but due to the complicated printing history of the book, Randolph and Wise are inconclusive as to their priority.
