Lot Essay

The figures of a Turk and his companion were conceived by Peter Reineke and Johann Friederich Eberlein circa 1744. They are based on an engraving by G.F. Schmidt after a painting by Lancred entitled Le Turc Amoreux. A similar pair, although of two male figures, sold Christie's London, 15 June 1995, lot 36 (#9,000).
