This model has been previously attributed to Riccio, Severo da Ravenna and also Stefano Bellano. Wixom discusses the current bronze in detail, citing other comparable models at length. Pointing out that the rider is in correct scale to the horse when viewed from one side, he further concludes that they were probably modelled by the same master despite the disproportionate scale when viewed from other viewpoints. The rather spontaneous and highly energized fluidity of movement shared between horse and rider evince the group's high quality. Other varients of this model include the one in the Untermeyer Collection, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; another in the Musée du Louvre; one lacking the rider attributed to Severo da Ravenna that sold Christie's London, 2 July 1991, lot 41: and a final that sold from the Hatvany Collection, Christie's London, 25 June 1980, lot 34.
