Lot Essay

The use of floral marquetry decoration on a Swedish commode in the eighteenth century is extremely rare. A commode, circa 1755, in the Swedish Royal Collections by Peter Dahlström, displaying a more elaborate floral decorated cartouche, and with a stronger French influence is illustrated T. Sylvén, Mäsarnas Möbler, Stockholm, 1996, p.88.
It is interesting therefore that a commode of this date should feature decoration of this type when it was not commonly found. The exaggerated bombé shape of this commode and small size relates it to an eighteenth century parquetry example of similar proportions by Johan Wilhelm Metzmacher is illustrated in T. Sylvén op. cit., p.264.
