Louise Nevelson is arguably the most celebrated female sculptor within the American Modernist movement. Martin Friedman celebrated her work, saying, "Nevelson's sculptures are phantom archetecture. Installed against the walls of a room or standing free, they allude to no single time or place. They are structures about the idea of architecture...The observer, unable to mentally penetrate the facades of her sculptures, is bemused by the transmutation of once familiar objects into timeless structures" (M. Friedman, Nevelson Wood Sculptures, New York, 1973, p. 7).
